News Bites: Deep Fried Tacos in Lower Greenville and a Beachy Lounge on Fitzhugh

Tex-Mex Time

While Tacos Mariachi closed in Lower Greenville and West Dallas, it has been somewhat reincarnated as Milagro in Trinity Groves. Now, the space on Greenville Avenue that Mariachi vacated is occupied by Eddie’s Tex-Mex. The new spot comes from Eddie Cervantes, who owns E-Bar in Old East Dallas, reports Paper City. Cervantes, who’s built a loyal following with top-notch queso and the best—the best!—fish tacos, will bring a similar menu to Eddie’s but with more deep-fried tacos.

Cape Town in Dallas

In 2019, Greg Katz opened Beverley’s, an updated take on the classic bistro, which we declared was “exactly what we’ve been longing for.” Now, the chef-restaurateur is bringing Fitzhugh Avenue another restaurant. This time it’s a neighborhood lounge called Clifton Club, so named for an “oceanfront neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa near where Katz grew up,” says Dallas Morning News. It’s expected to arrive by the end of this year at 3333 North Fitzhugh Avenue, formerly the gay bar Zippers’ space. 

Clandestine Cocktails

There’s a new speakeasy-like bar on Greenville Avenue: Apothecary. There are no windows, no signage, no indication that kooky cocktails based on savory dishes lurk within its peacock wallpapered walls. Apothecary opened last week and, per the Dallas Morning News, is “Dallas’ most impressive date-night spot right now.” I think that’s because it’s dark and you can drink a cacio e pepe libation and even the candles are edible. 

The Bonton Bill

Last week Gov. Greg Abbott signed the Bonton Farms Act into law. Named for the South Dallas urban farm, which feeds people in one of southern Dallas’ many food deserts and helps employ formerly incarcerated men and women. The act effectively wipes out many of the fines and fees that a person may have accrued before they were incarcerated. 

Ragin’ No More

Dallas CultureMap reports that Ragin’ Crab on Greenville Avenue has closed. The dining room appears mostly empty and somebody had scrawled a note and left it on the door: “Sorry we are not opened today – Manager.” The Ragin’ Crab website confirms the closure and says the restaurant will reopen in a new location is yet to be determined. A spokesperson told CultureMap that it was a lease issue and they hope to reopen in a new location in Dallas by the fall. Ragin’ Crab had served up Louisiana-style shellfish and Cajun dishes since 2016.
